The Grand Vicar was the official leader of the Church of God Awaiting, ruling over it in the name of the Archangel Langhorne. The Grand Vicar occupied a position very similar to that of the Pope during the height of the Catholic Church's power on Earth.

By the end of the 9th Century of God, the Grand Vicar had become a mere puppet of the Group of Four and the Knights of the Temple Lands. (OAR)

On occasion, the Grand Vicar would issue writs of instruction to clarify the Church's attitude on aspects of the Safeholdians' life, morals, and spirituality. (BSRA)

Late in the Year of God 898, Grand Inquisitor Zhaspahr Clyntahn, the de-facto power behind Grand Vicar Erek XVII, was overthrown and former Treasurer General Rhobair Duchairn became the new Grand Vicar, vowing to restore and reform the Church. (AST)
