Although Standard English was the language of the eight million Adams and Eves who colonized Safehold, it had developed considerably since then.

Much like Latin on Earth in the period after the fall of the Roman Empire, Standard English was the written language of the all-unifing Church, kings, and merchants, thus ensuring its survival. The Holy Writ, and The Testemonies were written in Standard English, and because of this, the written language and grammar remained unchanged since the time of the colonization.

However, dispite the static nature of the written langauge and grammar, the spoken words over time evolved as pronounciations across the planet varied, to the point where they could almost be considered dialects that could be barely understood by those from different nations. (OAR)
