A Matchlock is a primitive ignition mechanism used in firearms. It is composed of a lever mechanism which lowers a burning wick (also known as a slow-match) into the weapon's pan, thus setting off the powder charge. The term is also used to refer to any firearm using a matchlock mechanism.

Before the arrival of Merlin Athrawes, matchlock firearms were in common use and represented the height of safeholdian small arms technology.
