His father, Rahnyld IV, was forced to abdicate after Earl Thirsk's coup in the late Year of God 898. Teenage Rahnyld V succeeded him, with Thirsk serving as his First Counsellor and regent until he came of age in the Year of God 903. He was believed by many to be a promising monarch and an improvement on his father. (AST)
