The trunnions are the protrusions from the side of the barrel that rest on the carriage.

Trunnions were two projections cast on either side of a cannon, and when afixed to the cannon mount allowed for aimming in elevation, both above and below. It allowed for better aiming in all conditions, be it for artillery, or on naval vessels.

When introduced to Safehold by Merlin Athrawes, it gave the Royal Charisian Navy vast advantages during its early battles preluding the Holy War on Charis. (OAR)
